The Mercedes G-Class has been turned into almost everything imaginable over the years. We’ve seen six-wheelers, armored versions, pickups and enough widebody conversions to fill a reasonably large parking garage.
MANSORY has decided what it really needed was fewer doors and no metal roof.
The result is the MANSORY Azura, a heavily modified Mercedes-AMG G 63 W465 that has been converted into a two-door soft-top with rear-hinged doors. It isn’t simply a G-Class with the roof removed either. According to MANSORY, cutting away a structural part of the body required extensive reinforcement to the frame and sill areas so the vehicle could retain the rigidity needed for normal driving and off-road use.
That’s probably worth mentioning before we get distracted by the turquoise paint.
The original four-door arrangement disappears completely. MANSORY lengthens the remaining doors and hinges them at the rear, creating what are traditionally called suicide doors. Above them sits a lined fabric roof that operates electrically and can be ordered in different colors.
MANSORY also hasn’t forgotten the engine.
The standard 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 receives larger turbochargers, new downpipes, a high-performance exhaust and revised engine management. Instead of the factory 585 hp and 850 Nm, Azura produces 820 hp and 1,150 Nm.
It reaches 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds, while top speed is limited to 250 km/h. That’s quite a lot of performance for something shaped roughly like an apartment building.
The wheels aren’t exactly shy either. MANSORY fits its FC.15 design in 24-inch size with 295/30 tires at all four corners. The show car uses a two-tone finish, although the company offers the usual enormous range of customization choices.
Inside, things become stranger still.
Instead of retaining a conventional rear bench, MANSORY installs an individual rear seat alongside a bespoke center console. Leather colors, stitching and carbon-fiber finishes can all be chosen by the customer, with additional details including carbon pedals, quilted floor mats and a flat-bottom leather-and-carbon steering wheel.
Every Azura follows MANSORY’s “One of One” philosophy, so no two customer cars are supposed to be identical.
Whether the world needed an 820-hp convertible G-Class with two doors is probably not the right question.
Nobody reaches this end of the tuning market because they need something. A normal G 63 already offers more performance, luxury and presence than most owners could reasonably use. Azura exists for the customer who can park beside another G 63 in Monaco and still wants their own car to look completely different.
On that front, removing half the doors and the roof is fairly effective. Subtle it isn’t.
But MANSORY has never really built its business around people asking for subtle.
